Why Engine HP and PTO HP Are Different
Before power reaches the PTO shaft, it must drive engine accessories and pumps and pass through PTO clutches, gears, bearings, and lubricated components.

These systems consume power or create friction and oil-churning losses, so PTO output is normally lower than a comparable engine rating.
However, the numerical difference is not always a direct measure of mechanical efficiency.
One specification may show maximum gross engine horsepower, while another shows rated PTO horsepower at a specific engine speed. Subtracting those figures mixes different measurement points and operating conditions.
OECD Code 2 reports PTO output at defined test points, including rated engine speed and standard PTO speed. Compare tractors only when the rating type and test point are equivalent.
Some modern tractors also add power under specific PTO, hydraulic, or transport conditions. Do not treat boosted output as continuous base power unless the manufacturer states that it is continuously available.
Can You Convert Engine HP to PTO HP?
There is no universal formula for converting engine horsepower into exact PTO horsepower.
Percentage estimates can provide a rough starting point when no PTO rating is available, but the result depends on:
the engine rating standard;
rated versus maximum engine power;
accessory and pump loads;
the tractor’s PTO design;
engine and PTO test speeds;
transmission and model configuration;
any power-management system.
