Ghana is developing Farmer Service Centres as local hubs for machinery, inputs, extension support, storage, processing, training, and market access. The original Feed Ghana Programme targets 270 centres by 2028, while the 2026 rollout focuses on establishing the first 50.

By July 2026, the 2026 Mid-Year Fiscal Policy Review reported that work to establish those 50 centres had begun and that GH¢551 million had been placed in escrow to support a letter of credit for 1,840 units of agricultural machinery. The document does not show that all 50 centres were complete or operational, so construction, financing, delivery, and active services should be treated as separate stages.

The opportunity extends beyond tractor sales to local distribution, public-private partnership operation, parts, training, and maintenance. The strongest suppliers will match equipment to local crops and support it through peak farming seasons.

Why Official Machinery Numbers Differ

Official 2026 documents use different machinery totals and scopes.

The 2026 MoFA budget estimates state that agreements were finalized for more than 5,500 machines, including 660 tractors with implements, 400 combine harvesters, 300 planters, and 300 boom sprayers.

Ghana’s 2026 Budget Speech lists about 4,400 machines for 50 agricultural districts. Its breakdown includes 660 tractors, 200 minitractors, 300 tractor trailers, 300 boom sprayers, and 50 combine harvesters. The February State of the Nation Address instead refers to more than 4,000 machines and implements, including 660 tractors and 400 combines.

The July Mid-Year Fiscal Policy Review adds another figure: a letter of credit for 1,840 units, including tractors, trailers, power tillers, ploughs, cultivators, seed drills, sprayers, fertilizer spreaders, and combines. This appears to describe a financed procurement package rather than the complete long-term machinery plan.

The documents do not fully reconcile the different totals or the 50-versus-400 combine figure. Separate packages, reporting dates, counting methods, or implementation stages could explain the differences, but that remains an inference.

Dealers should use the figures to judge programme scale and confirm current quantities, specifications, delivery status, and bid availability in the relevant tender or contract.

Takoratwene also shows that a centre may require more than field machinery. Announced plans include tractors, combines, threshers, a maintenance unit, training, soil testing, input access, warehouses, silos, and crop purchasing.

Match the Machine to the Work

A centre should not receive a standard fleet simply because another district uses it. Crop type, field size, soil, rainfall, access, service distance, and the operating season should determine the package.

Rice-producing areas: need a connected system for land preparation, planting, harvesting, drying, cleaning, storage, and milling. Maize and soybean areas: depend more on compatible tractors, precision planters, fertilizer spreaders, boom sprayers, crop headers, shellers, trailers, and grain storage.

Cassava areas: need ridging, planting, lifting, transport, and processing equipment that a grain-focused fleet will not provide. Vegetable districts: may gain more from compact machinery, irrigation, precision spraying, packhouses, crates, and cold-chain support.

Orchards and tree-crop farms: need narrow tractors, orchard sprayers, mowers, trailers, and equipment suited to their row spacing and branch clearance.

Afram Plains produces significant quantities of maize, groundnuts, and cassava, so its final equipment package should reflect those value chains rather than copy a rice or vegetable centre.

Balance the Whole Fleet

Fleet capacity must be balanced. Buyers should match tractors and implements correctly by checking PTO power, hydraulic capacity, hitch category, lift capacity, working width, and field conditions. Tractors without enough compatible planters, sprayers, trailers, operators, fuel, and wear parts will sit idle. Faster harvesting without transport, drying, cleaning, and storage simply moves the bottleneck downstream.

The best package is not the one with the highest horsepower or largest machine count. It is the one that completes paid work on time and can be maintained with the centre’s people, parts, and budget.
